Getting to Skye

The Isle of Skye can be reached by car or public transport. You access the island via a road bridge (toll free) or ferry.

Public transport is frequent, not that expensive and the recommended method to get to the island.

You can use the Traveline Scotland app. on the right to help plan your journey to Portree or anywhere in Scotland.
BY TRAIN

Get the train from Glasgow to Mallaig (6 hours) or Inverness (2.5 hours). Get train tickets and times from Scotrail. Then take the ferry from Mallaig - see below.

BY FERRY FROM MALLAIG

The ferry only takes 20 minutes but is a wonderful way to arrive on Skye. Visit CalMac for details of the ferry that serves this route.

BY FERRY FROM GLENELG

If you are driving , add some romance to your journey to Skye and take the wee ferry from Glenelg. Visit Skye Ferry for details.

BY BUS

The cheapest option and because of the road bridge this method of public transport can take you right onto the island. Daily buses from Glasgow and Inverness. Tickets and times from Citylink.

BY CAR

It’s a fair drive of around 200 miles from Glasgow to Skye on good quality country roads. Traffic can be heavy in summer, so leave plenty of time for the journey.
