Beach Clean August 2nd 2021

If you are visiting Skye in August why not join us on a Beach Clean?

Join us on a journey through time, exploring the magical Elgol coastline. Together we can discover the human history of the area, a stronghold of the Clan Mackinnon, descendants of Fingon the son of King Alpin of Scots. Take a walk in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie and explore the cave where he hid as he fled after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden.
If natural history is more your thing, you won’t be disappointed. The Elgol coast is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geology. Rich in fossils dating back millions of years, some extremely rare and significant examples have been found here.
A stronghold for Golden Eagles and White Tailed Eagles, there is an excellent chance that you will catch a glimpse of these majestic birds whilst exploring the area. The seas are rich in life too, seals, otters, dolphins and whales are frequently spotted from our shores, even Orca have been seen on rare occasions!
Unfortunately our beautiful coastline is not as pristine as it should be, plastic waste is an ever increasing problem in our oceans and Skye’s coastline suffers like everywhere else! After a morning of exploration, join us in helping to clean up this magical coast as part of Skye’s Climate Feis – throughout August our communities are cleaning beaches across the island and you can be involved!
